Matt MaLossi is a fifth-year Senior pitcher for the Wheaton Thunder baseball team. MaLossi is currently tied for third on the all-time saves list for the Thunder. Below is a brief interview with Matt.
Q: What is your major?
A: I graduated undergrad with a Business/Economics degree. But this year I’ve been part of the CFM (Christian Formation & Ministry) program in Wheaton’s grad school.
Q: What (if any) plans do you have after graduation?
A: After this year I’ll be applying to a few positions within Major League Baseball front offices around the country. I’m going to continue following after this deeply rooted baseball passion I believe God has placed and developed in my life.
Q: Why did you choose to attend Wheaton and play baseball?
A: Wheaton wasn’t on my radar until the very end of high school; and that changed because of my baseball recruit visit. That time with the team ended up making the choice to come to here very easy for me. So, just as that initial experience with the baseball team opened my mind to coming here it has also helped make the rest of this five-year experience incredible. The brotherhood we have and great times we’ve shared have helped form me, and will be with me for the rest of my life.
Q: You had to miss a season due to arm surgery, why did you choose to come back for your final season?
A: I blew my arm out at the beginning of my junior season, had surgery, and missed the rest of that year. God did a lot of breaking me down during junior year and through those tough times I ended up committing to staying at Wheaton for another year. I stayed to continue growing important relationships here and because I felt strongly God was asking me to step out in faith and trust Him in that decision. Now, with hindsight, it was the greatest thing that could’ve happened. God has me in exactly the place I need to be.
Q: What do you enjoy most about Wheaton?
A: My favorite part of Wheaton has been the lifelong friendships I’ve made while being here. Whether those relationships come from the baseball team, roommates/friends, or my mentor; I know that I can always rely on them. They encourage me, support me, challenge me, and love me better than I could ever have expected of any friendship coming into college 5 years ago. This is a special community, and although it is definitely tough to be here sometimes, I would never trade it for another college experience anywhere else.
Q: What is your favorite baseball memory so far in your time at Wheaton?
A: Either, our team making it to the conference finals my freshman year. There’s nothing like playoff baseball. Or, the many Florida spring breaks we’ve had and the crazy memories we’ve made on them.
