Wheaton sophomore Laura Karsten is a member of the Wheaton women's soccer and women's basketball teams. She had a strong freshman campaign with both programs last year. She is currently recovering from an injury suffered during the 2009 soccer season. Below is a brief interview with the sophomore.
Q: What is your major?
A: Applied Health Science
Q: Why did you choose to attend and play two sports at Wheaton?
A: I always knew that I wanted to attend a smaller Christian college. My older brother, Wes, who will be a senior at Wheaton this year was a huge draw for me. There were so many positives about Wheaton for me – academics, Christian community, school size, and athletics. When I came on recruiting visits for soccer and basketball it was such a positive experience. I really felt that this is where God wanted me to be. I’ve played soccer and basketball my whole life and I had a hard time choosing just one. Being able to play both of them at Wheaton, and having coaches that were willing to work with me on it, was very appealing and I wanted to give it a shot.
Q: What is the most challenging thing about playing two sports?
A: Managing my time. Balancing practice schedules, team activities, academics and social events is pretty challenging, but also worth it for me. I know I miss out on some activities and opportunities because of my schedule, but I am very thankful for the opportunity that I have to play 2 sports.
Q: What do you enjoy most about playing basketball at Wheaton?
A: The relationship among the girls on the team is awesome. It is such a support system and I know that my teammates are there for me in whatever I do. I love the small group Bible studies that we have and the fun activities that we do as a team. The coaching staff is committed to making our team better, and they really give of themselves to make sure that happens.
Q: What do you enjoy most about playing soccer at Wheaton?
A: My teammates and the coaching staff are wonderful. They push me everyday to be a better player and a better person. It is so fun to be in a group of players and coaches that are so committed to the sport of soccer, but more importantly committed to serving the Lord in everything that we do. I am so blessed to be able to play soccer at this high level with girls that give God the glory for all our accomplishments.
