19334The Lake Forest College men’s soccer team earned the Midwest Conference’s automatic bid to the 2015 NCAA Division III Tournament by defeating Knox College 2-1 in last Saturday’s MWC Tournament final. The Foresters advanced to the final by edging out league champion and tournament host St. Norbert College on penalty kicks the day before.

Lake Forest enters this weekend with a 13-6-1 overall record, which includes victories in seven of 10 MWC contests. It is the second NCAA Division II Tournament appearance in the last three years for the Foresters and their fourth overall.

Senior Dylan Hartman leads the squad with 12 goals, 11 assists, and 35 points. Junior Ellis Rutili is next on the team with 20 points and it was his eighth goal of the season with just 74 seconds remaining in the MWC Tournament final that brought the Foresters here. Sophomores John Cappuccitti and Elyas Ingram rank second on the squad with nine goals and eight assists, respectively. Freshman Elvin Husetovic and sophomore Josh

Geiger have each seen time at goalkeeper down the stretch and have combined for a 1.35 goals against average on the season.

19335Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology makes its third consecutive appearance in the NCAA Division III Tournament. The Fightin’ Engineers have reached four NCAA Tournaments in the past five years and five in the eight-year head coaching career of Sean Helliwell. Rose-Hulman enters the weekend on a streak of 14 consecutive matches without a loss, dating back to Sept. 16.

This year’s NCAA Tournament trip came after a dramatic penalty kick victory over Hanover in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) Tournament last Saturday.  After a scoreless draw, Rose-Hulman relied on four goals in six attempts and several stops from goalkeeper Carter Wright to earn a 4-3 shootout victory.  The effort marked the third consecutive year that Rose-Hulman has advanced to the NCAA Tournament with an overtime win or draw in the HCAC Tournament title game.

Austin Webb leads the balanced scoring attack with eight goals and 19 points.  Junior Ben Lyon has added seven goals and 19 points, with Alex Jansen just behind at seven goals and 18 points.  Senior Dieter Schultz leads the squad with seven assists.

Defensively, Wright has a record of 10-1-5 in goal with a 0.69 goals against average.  His totals include 59 saves and an .843 save percentage. HCAC Defensive Player of the Year Nick Kowalkowski and four-year starter Mike Smyser lead a strong defensive unit.

Rose-Hulman stands 13-2-5 overall entering this year’s NCAA Division III Tournament.  The Fightin’ Engineers have faced UW-Whitewater once in program history, falling 5-2 in 1996.  Rose-Hulman played Wheaton to a 2-2 draw earlier this season and has never faced Lake Forest.

19336The UW-Whitewater men’s soccer team enters the 2015 NCAA Division III tournament with a 14-3-1 record during their first year as an independent. This is the Warhawks’ second consecutive trip to the tournament under fourth-year Head Coach Tony Guinn. This is UW-Whitewater’s ninth appearance in program history. The Sweet 16 is the farthest the Warhawks have advanced in school history. UW-W managed the feat in both 2002 and 2010.

The Warhawks use a well-balanced offensive attack to go along with a stout defense. Thirteen different Warhawks have scored a goal, led by Dylan Hottsmith with seven. Six foot eight Justin Stanko anchors a seasoned backline that has totaled seven shutouts this season.

Senior goalkeeper Alex Buchman has recorded nearly 1500 minutes in net for the Warhawks this season. He boasts a goals against average just under one to go along with 47 saves and five solo shutouts.
UW-Whitewater has not played a match since October 28th when they lost a 3-2 overtime thriller to in-state rival UW-Platteville. Four days prior the Warhawks played fellow NCAA Tournament participant UW-Oshkosh to a 0-0 double-overtime tie.

The last, and only, time the Warhawks faced their first round opponent Rose-Hulman was back in 1996. The Warhawks topped the Fightin’ Engineers 5-2.
Last season the Warhawks hosted Carroll University in the first round of the NCAA tournament and topped the Pioneers 3-1. In the round of 32 UW-Whitewater traveled to Wheaton (Ill.) and lost to the eventual National Runner-Up 3-0.

Marshall Hollingsworth, the 2014 and 2015 CCIW Player of the Year is ranked in the top-20 in Division III in goals with 17 this year. Golz, a Division III All-American in 2014, has 44 goals in his career, a mark that ranks ninth in school history.
Robbins has tallied four goals with four assists. Forward Noah Gulley picked up Second Team All-CCIW recognition. He has tallied a team-best six assists this season.

Bartley was joined on the All-CCIW Team by fellow defender Jon Clark. The duo is part of a Wheaton defense that allowed four goals in conference play. Wheaton has posted nine shutouts this season, with a 0.79 goals against average.

Wheaton and Lake Forest have faced each other 36 times through the years, as the Thunder hold a 28-6-2 advantage. The last meeting between the two programs was a 1-0 victory for Wheaton in two overtimes to conclude the 2006 regular season. Wheaton is 1-0-1 all-time against Rose-Hulman, following a 2-2 tie against the Fightin’ Engineers earlier this year. The Thunder has a 6-0-0 all-time record against UW-Whitewater, including a 3-0 victory against Warhawks last year in the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament.
