PETE WILLSON-WHEATON INVITATIONAL RECAP
Wheaton, Ill. – UW-Parkside won the 2009 Pete Willson-Wheaton Invitational for the fifth time in the tournament's long and storied history, however, it was the program's first victory since 1994. UW-Parkside (PICTURED LEFT) scored 145 points, with three first-place finishes and two second-place efforts on the weekend.
Two-time defending champion UW-LaCrosse scored 133 points in second place, North Central finished third with 125.5 points, UW-Whitewater scored 91.5 points in fourth place and John Carroll was fifth with 87.5 points. The host Wheaton College Thunderscored 37 points in 15th place.
George Olson Outstanding Wrestler - Jason Brew
Olivet College's Jason Brew, the tournament champion at 157-pounds, was named the "George Olson Outstanding Wrestler". Brew, the top-seed, capped off his strong weekend by winning a 15-4 major decision against third-seeded Zach Mizer of Heidelberg.
Corey VanGroll of UW-Parkside, the tournament runner-up in the 165-pound weight class, was selected by the tournament's officials as the recepient of the "Pete George Sportsmanship Award". Elie Naoum of John Carroll received the "Jack Swartz Most Falls Award" as he recorded four falls during the tournament in a cumulative time of 9:57. Tony Carothers of Heidelberg University was recognized with the "Fastest Fall Award" (20-seconds)
Wheaton College senior #Toby Boltz#, the number-six seed at 184-pounds, won by a fall at 1:18 against Greg Taylor of Maranatha Baptist Bible College in the first round. Boltz won via a forfeit against Matt Olsen of MSOE in the second round and he dropped a 10-5 decision to third-seeded John Zabel of UW-LaCrosse. Boltz defeated Brian Kerr of Augustana, 9-4 in the consolation round on Saturday morning and won a 6-3 decision against Brad Zellener of UW-Platteville. He dropped a 6-1 decision to Ben Adams of John Carroll to move into the fifth place match where lost in a medical forfeit to Sam Leas of Lawrence University.
Wheaton’s #Justin Marble# received a first-round bye and lost a 3-2 decision to Jake Frias in their second round match at 165-pounds. Marble defeated Jake Blackwell of Indianapolis in an 8-4 decision in the consolation round and he picked up a 5-2 win against University of Chicago’s Chris Canty. Marble defeated Jake Gosch of UW-LaCrosse in Saturday’s consolation action, 8-6. Marble won a 5-3 decision against eighth-seeded Cory Martinson of Heidelberg and dropped a technical fall to sixth-seeded Greg Horn of Elmhurst. Marble lost a 7-5 decision to Tyler Goble of Rose-Hulman in the fifth place match.
