Wheaton, Ill. – The Thunder wrestling team hosted the Wheaton Duals on Saturday afternoon as #28-ranked University of Dubuque, Manchester University and Maranatha Baptist University visited King Arena for the event. Wheaton, ranked 26th in the most recent
NWCA Division III Wrestling Coach Poll, won all three matches on the day to improve to 10-1 this year in dual matches. Wheaton is assured of posting a record better than .500 for the first time since 1998-99 when the Wheaton wrestling program finished 7-4. This season also marks the first time Wheaton has 10 victories in its dual match schedule since the 1968-69 team compiled a record of 10-4-1.
The most eventful dual match of the day occurred in the second session as Wheaton rallied to defeat Dubuque 27-15 in the only match of the day that featured ranked teams. Dubuque won the first four matches to earn a 13-0 lead on the Thunder. Wheaton's first points came at 157-pounds as Wheaton's
Mark Savenok won by disqualification following three warnings to his opponent, Joshua Lewis of Dubuque. Savenok's victory was coupled with a one-point team deduction for the Spartans for unsportsmanlike conduct. Derek Mizauer of Dubuque won the following match, however, Wheaton would go on to win the next four matches, including three by fall. The Spartans led the match 15-6 following Mizauer's win.
Thunder senior
Matt McCrary (PICTURED LEFT) sparked the Wheaton rally against Dubuque when he won by fall with a quick pin just 1:12 into his match at 174-pounds. Thunder All-American
Dan Olsen won a 7-3 decision at 184-pounds to tie the match at 15-15. Senior
Mitch Steed put Wheaton in the lead 21-15 when he picked up a late fall with just five-seconds remaining in his match at 197-pounds. Freshman
Taylor Gohn locked up the dramatic win for Wheaton with a pin at the 4:14 mark of his match at 285-pounds against Martin Flemming.
Wheaton will host North Central College on Tuesday night at 7 PM in the final match of the 2013-14 schedule for the Thunder.
