COMPLETE RESULTS

Winneconne, Wis. –
The Thunder men's cross country team competed at the 2011 Division III Men's Cross Country Championship on Saturday, hosted by UW-Oshkosh. The Thunder finished 12th in the 32-team field. With its fifth-ever team appearance at the Division III Championship, today's effort marks Wheaton's highest finish since a fourth-place effort at the 1985 Division III Championship.

Wheaton junior Mark Phillips ran the 8K course in 24:38.17 to finish in 24th place overall. Phillips' effort earns him All-American honors, awarded to the top-35 finishers in the race. He becomes Wheaton's first men's cross country All-American since Brandon Mull earned the honor in 2007 and 2008.

James Waterman
Sophomore James Waterman (PICTURED RIGHT) was 63rd in the 279-man field with a time of 25:01.28. Junior Parker Thompson was 106th in 25:18.96 and senior Jacob Goertz posted a time of 25:30.82 in 134th. Freshman Brett Haffner rounded out Wheaton's five scoring runners with a time of 25:35.87 to finish in 149th. Junior Nate Hatton was 151st in 25:36.70 and sophomore Jake Waterman ran the course in 25:41.50 to finish 166th.

Thunder head coach Scott Bradley noted after the race, “We ran a real strong race as a team. Our goal was to finish in the top-ten and we fell just short of that. Mark rebounded from his Regional race, where he placed 26th to get 24th today.” Bradley added, “While we may not have finished as high as we would have hoped this year, we lose one runner out of our top 14. Next year we hope to improve on our place. This was the first cross country Nationals experience for all of our athletes so hopefully we will build upon that experience.”

North Central College repeated as Division III Championship with 110 total points, to finish ahead of second-place Haverford's 172 points. Washington (Mo.) scored 206 points in third place, SUNY Geneseo was fourth with 235 points, host UW-Oshkosh scored 277 points in fifth place, Williams College was sixth with 278 points, Bates was seventh with 294 points and St. Lawrence University scored 304 points in eighth place.
