Orange, California – The Wheaton College softball team spilt a pair of games on Tuesday afternoon at Chapman University's “Sunwest Tournament. Wheaton was a 32-2 victor over Penn State Abington the first game of the day. The Thunder lost a 2-1 decision to DeSales University in the second game.
Freshman pitcher
Danielle Schmidt tossed a no-hitter in Wheaton's 31-2 victory against Penn State Abington. In just her second collegiate game, Schmidt held PSU-Abington hitless, allowing two runs, one of which was earned. She walked three batters and struck out 10 in five innings of work. Wheaton scored 31 runs, on 26 hits, with one error. Penn State-Abington scored two runs, on no hits, with three errors.
Junior
Christine Williams was 6-for-6 at the plate, with two doubles, five runs scored and five RBI. Senior
Adrienne Munoz was 3-for-4, with one home run, six RBI and three runs scored. Junior
Katie Iser was 4-for-6 with three runs scored and two RBI.
Kelli Hennessey was 3-for-4, with four RBI and two runs scored. Freshman
Suzanne Teuben was 3-for-4, with two runs and three runs driven in. Sophomore
Lesley Guenard was 2-for-3, with two RBI and a run scored.
DeSales University defeated Wheaton 2-1 in the second game of the day for the Thunder. DeSales scored one run, on five hits, with one error and Wheaton scored one run, on five hits with no errors. Sophomore
Ainsley McCullough (1-1) took the loss for the Thunder in 6-1/3 innings of work. McCullough allowed two earned runs, on five hits, with six strikeouts and two walks. Guenard was 2-for-2, with a RBI. Iser and Hennessey each hit doubles and Iser also stole a base.
Wheaton took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning when sophomore
Jenna Lawrenz led off with a double to leftfield. Lawrenz scored on the next at-bat when Guenard hit a sacrifice fly to right field. In the bottom of the seventh inning, DeSales put runners at second and third base with one out when the Bulldogs hit a one-out single through the middle of the infield to drive in both base runners and secure the victory for DeSales.
Wheaton (2-2) will play two more games in the tournament o n Wednesday. The Thunder will take on tournament host, Chapman University at 12 PM (PST) and face DeSales again at 2 PM (PST).
