Orange, Calif. – The Thunder softball team posted a 1-1 record on Thursday in its two games at the Sun west Tournament. Wheaton defeated DeSales University 2-0 and dropped a 3-1 decision to Holy Names University. The Thunder (4-4) will close out its participation in the Sunwest Tournament on Friday with games against Suffolk University and Penn State-Abington.
In its first game of the day, Wheaton lost to Holy Names University 3-1. The Hawks scored three runs, on six hits, committing three errors and Wheaton plated one run, on seven hits, with two errors. Wheaton freshman pitched six innings and took the loss. The rookie allowed three runs, including two earned runs, on six hits, with two strikeouts and three walks. Junior
Christine Williams was 2-for-3 at the plate and drew a walk.
The Hawks scored a run in the bottom of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead on the Thunder. Wheaton tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the third inning when
Adrienne Munoz reached on an error and scored two batters later when
Amanda Mattocks hit a single through the middle of the infield. Holy Names scored a run in the bottom of the fifth inning to regain the lead with a 2-1 advantage and the Hawks extended their lead to 3-1 with a run in the bottom of the sixth inning.
In the second game, Wheaton defeated DeSales as the Thunder scored two runs, on eight hits and Bulldogs were held scoreless on seven hits. Neither team committed an error. Sophomore pitcher
Ainsley McCullough (3-1) tossed the complete game shutout for the Thunder. McCullough scattered seven hits, with two strikeouts. Mattocks was 2-for-2 at the plate with a double. Junior
Katie Iser was 2-for-2, with a run scored.
The two teams battled through a scoreless contest until the bottom of the fifth inning when Wheaton plated both of its runs.
Suzanne Teuben and Iser opened Wheaton's fifth inning with consecutive singles. In the next at-bat, McCullough reached on a fielder's choice and both Teuben and Iser advanced on the play to load the bases with no outs. Munoz hit a sacrifice fly to leftfield that brought Teuben home and gave the Thunder a 1-0 lead. Wheaton's lead increased to 2-0 when Williams singled through the middle of the infield to drive in Iser.
