Wheaton, Ill. - The Wheaton College wrestling team won a pair of dual meets on Friday by scores of 34-9 over Hannibal-LaGrange College and 27-22 over Knox College on Friday.
In the first match of the night against Hannibal-LaGrange, both teams had double forfeits at 125 pounds and heavyweight weight classes.
Stephen Takashima,
Matthew Cordell,
Paul Harvey and #Matthew Griffiths all received forfeit wins for the Thunder.
The matches that were wrestled featured wins by
Caleb Cardenas by a score of 11-0 at 133 pounds and by
Justin Marble with a pin at 184 pounds.
The Thunder pulled out a close five-point win over the Prairie Fire in the second dual match of the night. Cardenas had the most dramatic ending of the night as he beat Edel Vaca 8-6 in overtime on a takedown at the buzzer.
Wheaton won five more matches in the other weight classes. At 149 pounds,
Casey Krahn won 9-1 over Dugan O'Connor and Cordell won via pin in the first period at 157 pounds.
Justin Tomal picked up a 9-1 win at 174 pounds, Marble won 11-2 at 184 pounds and Griffiths won another match via forfeit.
In an exhibition match at 157 pounds, Takahima won via pin at 2:08 in the first period.
“Caleb really got his eyes opened to how well he can potentially wrestle at 133 pounds for us," Wheaton head coach
Jim Gruenwald said. "His win over the Knox opponent was a textbook example of wrestling the whole match, right up until that final buzzer when he scored that takedown.”
The Thunder resume action starting at 9:30 AM on Saturday at the MSOE Invitational.
