HOPE COLLEGE 1, WHEATON COLLEGE 0
Hope College used the match’s lone goal to defeat the host Wheaton Thunder 1-0 on Friday in a first round match of the 2014 NCAA Division III Women’s Soccer Tournament. Hope (17-3-2) advances to the tournament’s second round on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. to face either Illinois Wesleyan or University of Dubuque. Wheaton ends the season with a record of 18-2-2 after winning both the CCIW Championship and the CCIW Tournament.
 
Hope held the momentum early in the match as the Flying Dutch possessed the ball in their end of the first for the first 15 minutes. Wheaton held a 16-7 advantage in shots in the opening half that was scoreless at the halftime intermissions. It was Wheaton’s momentum in the second half that came out early from the intermission. The Thunder held a 12-8 shot advantage in the second half, with a 4-1 edge in shots on goal.
 
Wheaton out-shot Hope 6-0 in the first overtime as Flying Dutch goalkeeper Kat Dickson made three saves. Dickson also made a save in the second overtime period. Erin Brophy was just outside the 18-yard penalty box when she found her teammate, Allie Wittenbach wide open. Wittenbach put the game-winning goal in the net out of the reach of Thunder goalkeeper Kelsey Graham. Wittenbach’s eighth goal of the year came in the 105th minute of the match and secured the win and the trip to the second round of the NCAA Tournament for Hope.
 
Wheaton attempted 35 shots in the match and was awarded 10 corner kicks. Hope attempted 16 shots and had three corner kicks. Graham made eight saves in the match in 104:03 minutes of action, allowing just one goal. Dickson made 14 saves to record the shutout for the Flying Dutch.

ILLINOIS WESLEYAN 4, DUBUQUE 2
The Titans of Illinois Wesleyan advanced to the second round of the 2014 NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Tournament with a 4-2 win against University of Dubuque on Friday in a first round match of the tournament. Dubuque ends the season at 16-5-0. Illinois Wesleyan (15-6-1) will face Hope College in the second round on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.

Dubuque took an early 1-0 lead with a goal by Megan Siepler in the seventh minute that was assisted by Katie Lynn. IWU tied the match at 1-1 with a goal in the eighth minute by Skyler Tomko that was assisted by Ashley Montijo. The Titans took the lead in the 21st as Tess Bottorff scored to give IWU a 2-1 lead. Alex Partipilo of Illinois Wesleyan scored in the 43rd minute off of an Alison Seger assist to give the Titans a 3-1 lead at halftime.

Bottorff scored thanks to a Jenna Baker assist in the 60th minute as IWU led 4-1. Dubuque's Kelsey Graefen scored in the 81st minute from a Lauren Waddell assist to account for the 4-2 final score.

Illinois Wesleyan out-shot the Spartans 14-10 in the match. The Titans had five corner kicks and Dubuque attempted three. Illinois Wesleyan goalkeeper Dana Jourdan made three saves and allowed two goals. Dubuque netminder Tiffany Duncan made five saves and allowed four goals.

15820HOPE COLLEGE FLYING DUTCH
Hope claimed an automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament last Saturday. The Flying Dutch defeated Kalamazoo 5-4 in penalty kicks in the MIAA Tournament championship match after the two teams played 110 minutes of regulation and overtime soccer scoreless.  Hope posted a 14-1-1 record to win the fourth MIAA regular-season championship in team history.

This year’s appearance is Hope’s fourth to the NCAA Division III Women’s Soccer Championship. The Flying Dutch are 1-3 all-time in postseason play with three trips to nationals between 2003-05.

Hope has outscored opponents by a 41-13 margin this season.  The Flying Dutch have used a balanced attack with nine different goalscorers this season, including eight with more than one goal. Senior forward Nora Kirk and sophomore forward Elizabeth Perkins top Hope with nine goals apiece. Freshman forward Allie Wittenbach has chipped in seven goals, while senior midfielder Erin Jipping has five goals and senior forward Lindsey Bieri has four.

Senior goalie Kat Dickson anchors the Hope defense with a 0.61 goals against average and 10 shutouts that ranks second all-time for a single-season at Hope. Dickson’s 16 career shutouts are the second most in team history. Senior back Courtney Schmidt has started, to date, in all 84 games of her Hope career.

15821UNIVERSITY OF DUBUQUE SPARTANS
The University of Dubuque women’s soccer team sports a 16-4-1 record and went 6-1 during IIAC play. The IIAC Champions qualified for their second NCAA tournament after receiving the Iowa Conference’s automatic bid after winning the IIAC tournament title over Central College, 0-0 3OT (advanced on PKs 6-5). It was the Spartans third straight IIAC tournament title game and the first time in school history to win both IIAC regular season and tournament titles.

The University of Dubuque secured their first NCAA bid after winning IIAC Tournament title in 2009. The Spartans fell to Concordia-Moorhead, 0-2, in their first NCAA appearance. UD is currently riding a six-game win streak (including the IIAC title game), and are winners in 11 of their last 12 matches.
 
UD’s 2013 First team All-IIAC forward Megan Siepler and Katie Lynn lead the Spartan attack after finishing the regular season with nine goals each. The pair also attempted the most shots for the Spartans with Lynn launching 82 and Siepler shooting 66. The duo each won an IIAC Offensive Performer of the Week honor during the course of the 2014 season. Freshman Kyleigh McLaughlin led the team with 28 shots in seven league games. Senior goalkeeper Tiffany Duncan, a 2013 Second team All-IIAC selection,  anchors the defense with 94 saves and 15 goals against in 21 games between the posts. She led the IIAC with a 0.59 GAA and finished second in save percentage at .862. She was also named an IIAC Defensive Performer of the Week.
 
The Spartans have outscored opponents 42-15 and surrendered just five goals in seven conference match-ups. UD have outshot the opposition 372-200 and have attempted more than twice as many corner kicks, 104-50.

The Spartans carry a 4-6 record against CCIW competition since 2011. They are 0-1 against CCIW’s Wheaton (Ill.) and have never played CCIW’s Illinois Wesleyan University or Hope College of the MIAA.

The Illinois Wesleyan women’s soccer team is making its second straight and seventh overall NCAA Division III tournament appearance. Illinois Wesleyan enters the NCAA tournament with a 14-6-1 overall record and the Titans finished second in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin with a 5-1-1 record.

In his 14th season as IWU head coach, David Barrett has an overall record of 181-70-32 (.696 winning percentage) with a conference record of 67-22-9 (.730 percent).
The Titans have outscored opponents 55-14 this season and have allowed only four first-half goals.

Junior forward Sydney Fox is IWU’s leading scorer with 12 goals and four assists while sophomore forward Skyler Tomko has 11 goals with three assists and had a school-record four goals in a match vs. Earlham. Sophomore Amanda Kaiser has 20 points coming on five goals with 10 assists. Sophomore goalkeeper Dana Jourdan has a 0.60 goals-against average and has made 44 saves with six shutouts.

Illinois Wesleyan seniors Tess Bottorff and Julie Govedarica along with junior defender Mary Kate Schmidt were chosen to the first team of the 2014 CCIW all-conference squads. Freshman midfielder Rachel Westerkamp was selected as the league's "Newcomer of the Year" and was named to the all-CCIW second team along with Tomko.

Govedarica was also a first team selection in 2013 and a second team honoree in 2012 as a sophomore while Schmidt is a first team selection for the second straight season and was a three-time CCIW “Player of the Week” this season.

The Titans have a 3-4-3 record in six previous NCAA tournaments. In 2013 as the host school of the first and second rounds, the Titans ousted Transylvania, 3-0, before battling eventual national runner-up Trinity (Texas) to a 1-1 tie and falling 5-4 in penalty kicks for the right to advance.

Wheaton earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament by defeating Illinois Wesleyan 1-0 in the CCIW Tournament Final last Saturday. Wheaton is 18-1-2 on the season and posted a 6-0-1 record in CCIW play to win the program’s 17th CCIW Championship.

This year’s trip to the postseason is Wheaton’s 18th consecutive appearance in the NCAA Division III Women’s Soccer Tournament. Wheaton is 48-11-5 (.789) all-time in the postseason, with seven Final Four appearances and National Championships in 2004, 2006 and 2007, in addition to runner-up finishes in 2008 and 2011. Wheaton’s 78.9% tournament winning percentage is the second-highest of any current Division III member institution in the history of the Division III Women’s Soccer Tournament and the program’s 48 all-time tournament wins is the third-highest among current Division III institutions.

Wheaton has tallied 73 goals this season and allowed just nine. The 3.48 goals per game averaged by the Thunder ranks 17th in Division III. Defensively, Wheaton has a team goals against average of 0.42 that ranks 14th in Division III and a 0.714 shutout percentage that ranks 10th.

Senior Alexa Sharkey was named the CCIW Player of the Year earlier this week and also named to the All-CCIW First Team. Sharkey, goalkeeper Kelsey Graham, a First Team All-CCIW pick, and Second Team honoree Megan Campbell anchor a Wheaton defense that has recorded 15 shutouts in 21 matches.

Ally Witt, a First Team All-CCIW honoree, leads the Thunder with 17 goals this season, posting a team-best 36 total points. Sarah Frey is second on the Thunder with 10 goals and has a team-best eight assists. Sydney Sharkey has seven goals and is tied with Frey for the assists lead with eight. Witt and Sydney Sharkey earned All-CCIW honors in the midfield this week along with Sarah Guidera.
