Wheaton, Ill. – The Wheaton College women’s soccer opened the NCAA Division III Women’s Soccer Tournament on Friday with a 4-0 victory against Webster University at Joe Bean Stadium on the Wheaton campus. Wheaton (16-3-2) advances to the Second Round on Saturday at 5 PM. Webster closes the season with a 16-6-0 record.
Wheaton sophomore Sarah Guidera sparked Wheaton’s scoring with a goal from about five yards away from the net in the 10th minute. Guidera’s goal was assisted by Thunder sophomore Anna Seabolt and junior Leah DeMoss. Freshman Ally Witt extended Wheaton’s lead to 2-0 with a goal in the 30th minute that was assisted by Guidera and Sydney Sharkey. The Thunder led the Gorlocks 2-0 at halftime.
DeMoss increased the hosts’ lead to 3-0 early in the second half when she blasted in a shot from six yards out that was assisted by Seabolt in the 49th minute. Witt netted her second goal of the match in the 86th minute as she marched through the Webster defense to cap the 4-0 victory.
Wheaton out-shot Webster 26-8 on the day with the Thunder holding a 15-1 advantage in shots on goal. Webster goalkeeper Jessica Davis made 11 saves, with four goals allowed. Thunder netminder Kelsey Graham stopped one Webster shot to guide the Wheaton shutout.
UW-WHITEWATER 4, WITTENBERG 0
Wheaton, Ill. – The UW-Whitewater Warhawks advanced to the Second Round of the 2012 NCAA Division III Tournament with a 4-0 victory against Wittenberg University on Friday afternoon at Joe Bean Stadium on the campus of Wheaton College. UW-Whitewater (16-4-1) will face Wheaton College (18-3-2) on Saturday at 5 PM in a Second Round Match of the Tournament.
The Warhawks took an early 1-0 lead thanks to an Alyssa Chamberlain goal that was assisted by Jessica Allemang in the sixth minute. Kelsey Finn increased the UW-Whitewater lead to 2-0 in the 14
th minute when she scored from the top of the box. The Warhawks extended their lead to 3-0 in the 23
rd minute on a goal by Sarah Sedlar that was assisted by Chamberlain and Jenna Woodson.
The UW-Whitewater lead remained 3-0 for the rest of the first half. Natalie Lechner scored in the 53
rd minute to account for the 4-0 Warhawks’ victory.
TOURNAMENT PREVIEW
Webster University is making their ninth NCAA Tournament appearance in women's soccer. The #3-seed in the SLIAC Tournament, Webster claimed the conference's automatic bid with a 1-0 victory over Greeneville College in the SLIAC Tournament Championship game.
In his 14th season at the helm for the Gorloks, Luigi Scire earned his 200th career victory earlier this season. Scire has been named the SLIAC Coach of the Year five times, and led his team to eight conference championships. Scire's squad enters the 2012 NCAA Tournament with a record of 16-5 overall and 7-1 in the SLIAC.

Eight Gorloks earned All-SLIAC honors highlighted by Ally Nikolaus (PICTURED RIGHT) who was selected to the First Team as well as being named the 2012 SLIAC Tournament Most Valuable Player. Nikolaus tallied 11 goals and 10 assists on the season for the Gorloks. Also earning at First Team nod was goalkeeper Jessica Davis. Davis has been in net for every minute of play this season and has posted 14 shutouts and allowed 10 goals for a 0.47 goals against average. Rounding out the First Teamers for the Gorloks was defender Amy Schield. Sophomore Kristin Montgomery was a Second Team All-SLIAC selection and led the Gorloks with 12 goals including five game-winners. SLIAC Newcomer of the Year Lauren Pratt was also a Second Team All-SLIAC honoree after scoring 10 goals.
Also earning All-SLIAC nods were defender Kristen Muehlenfield (Second Team) and forward Ashley Mess (Honorable Mention).
Webster is 0-2 all-time against Wheaton.

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater returns to the NCAA Tournament field after making their first ever appearance last year. In 2011, the Warhawks advanced to the Sweet 16 before being defeated by Wheaton (Ill.) 4-1.
Whitewater enters the tournament having not dropped a game since the end of September, a span of nine games. The Warhawks captured third straight WIAC crown with a perfect 8-0-0 slate in conference games and claimed the WIAC automatic qualifying bid with a 1-0 victory over the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.
First year head coach Ryan Quamme led UW-W to a 15-4-1 mark, setting a school record for most victories in a season.
The Warhawks are led in goal by Jordan Myers (PICTURED RIGHT), who posted seven shutouts and an 0.83 goals against average in her sophomore season. Offensively, Whitewater features a pair of 10-goal scorers in Christina Tooren (12 goals, seven assists) and Jenna Woodson (10 goals, five assists).

WHEATON COLLEGE THUNDER

This year’s trip to the postseason is Wheaton’s 16th consecutive appearance in the NCAA Division III Women’s Soccer Tournament, the second-longest active streak in Division III. Wheaton is 41-9-5 (.791) all-time in the postseason, with six Final Four appearances and National Championships in 2004, 2006 and 2007, in addition to a runner-up finishes in 2008 and 2011. Wheaton’s 79.1% tournament winning percentage is the second-highest of any current Division III member institution in the history of the Division III
Wheaton earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, by winning the CCIW Tournament. The Thunder defeated NCAA qualifier Augustana 2-0 in the CCIW Tournament Chamionship match. Wheaton posted a 17-3-2 record on the season, with a 5-1-1 record in CCIW play.
Six members of the 2012 Wheaton College women's soccer team were selected to the 2012 CCIW All-Conferece team earlier this week. Junior transfer Leah DeMoss (PICTURED RIGHT) was named the CCIW Newcomer of the Year. DeMoss scored 18 goals to go along with 9 assists. Two-time All-American Laura Karsten was also named to the All-CCIW First Team. Karsten anchored a defense that allowed just one goal in CCIW play. All-American Keri Shannon was also named the First Team with three goals and six assists.
Freshman Ally Witt earned a Second Team nod with 15 goals and five assists for the Thunder. Defenders Amanda Brait and Alexa Sharkey also were Second Team selections. Goalkeepers Kelsey Graham and Hilary Barreto have combined to post 11 shutouts and a 0.77 goals against average.

WITTENBERG UNIVERSITY TIGERS
Wittenberg is making its fifth NCAA Division III Tournament appearance, all since 2006. The Tigers have a 3-3-2 record in tournament play, with their last appearance coming in 2009. The best finish in school history was an appearance in the Round of 16 in 2007 (lost to Ithaca 1-0 at York).
Wittenberg went 3-3-1 this season against teams selected to the NCAA Division III Tournament field. The Tigers defeated DePauw, Transylvania and Ohio Northern. The Tigers lost to DePauw (NCAC Tournament semifinals), Frostburg State and Thomas More. The Tigers tied Carnegie Mellon.
The Tigers posted a record of 11-4-3 in 2012, claiming their second NCAC regular season championship in program history with a 7-0-1 conference mark. Prior to the NCAC Tournament semifinal loss, the Tigers were a perfect 7-0 at home in 2012.
Head Coach Kwame Lloyd was named NCAC Coach of the Year and senior Lauren McMahon was named NCAC Defensive Player of the Year. The Tigers rank among the best defensive teams in the nation, allowing just 10 goals in 18 games in 2012. Wittenberg has 11 shutouts, even while splitting the goalkeeping minutes almost evenly between seniors Cassie Lythjohan and Melissa Gartner. Senior Kailey Striebel (PICTURED RIGHT) is the third-leading scorer in program history, both in terms of career goals and career total points.
