Sarah Ray and
Julie Buursma represented the Thunder this weekend at the USTA/ITA Central Region Championships, hosted by Washington University-St. Louis.
Ray opened singles play on Friday as the #10-seed. She won her first-round match against Lake Forest College's Grace Mulline 6-0, 6-0. She was a second round winner in three sets against Steph White of Kenyon College. Ray opened the match with a 6-3 win against White who won the second set 7-5. Ray closed out the match with a 6-3 victory in the third set. Jamie Silverberg of Washington defeated Ray 6-4, 7-5 in the tournament's third round.
Buursma dropped her first round match against Heather Abzug of Kenyon College 6-7, 6-3, 6-7. In the consolation round Buursma topped Michelle Tuma of Ohio Northern University 6-3, 6-1. Buursma advanced to the quarterfinal round of the consolation tournament with a 6-1, 6-2 victory against Denison's Eleni Coleman.
Buursma and Ray paired with each other in the doubles tournament. The duo defeated Lauren Rife and Kelsie Wurm from Ohio Northern 8-1 in the opening round. Buursma and Ray won their second round match with an 8-5 win against Principia's Kelly Adams and Sarah Corbitt. Case Western Reserve's team of Kat Evers and Sara Zargham defeated the Thunder duo 8-3 in the third round.
