Oak Brook, Ill. - The Thunder women's tennis team defeated Coe College 6-3 on Saturday night in meeting of regionally ranked foes. Wheaton is now 11-1 on the season and ranked eighth in the ITA Division III Central Region rankings. Coe takes its first loss of the year to fall to 14-1 and is ranked ninth in the regional rankings.
Coe jumped out to a 3-0 lead tonight by winning all three doubles matches. The Thunder rallied to win all six singles matches and secure the key regional victory. Wheaton head coach
Jane Nelson noted, "After we got down 3-0, the players just had a look of determination on their faces and went out there and played great in singles. It was a really hard fought battle and a big victory for us against a quality opponent."
Senior
Elizabeth Worsowicz was a 6-3, 6-3 winner at number-one singles, while
Sarah Ray battled to earn a 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 victory at number-two singles.
Kirsten Boyer won at number-three singles 6-0, 6-2 and
Lauren Schlabach picked up a 6-3, 6-3 victory at number-four singles.
Marissa Shults was victorious at number-five singles 7-6, 6-2 and
Julia Carey was a 6-1, 6-0 winner at number six singles.
The Thunder will be off until March 7 when it plays the first of three matches on the team's Spring Break trip to Orlando, Florida.
