Records fall as Thunder track teams compete at NCC Cardinal Classic

The Wheaton Thunder men's and women's track and field teams competed at the North Central Cardinal Classic, an indoor event at North Central College on Friday night. The Wheaton women finished third in a seven-team field and the men were fifth in an 11-team field.

Lewis University won the women's competition with 171.5 points, North Central took second with 149 points, Wheaton scored 79 points in third place, Wisconsin-Platteville finished fourth with 67 points and College of DuPage was fifth with 30.5 points.

Senior sprinter Renee Bettinger won the women's 200-meter dash with a time of 26.38-seconds and she took third in the 60-meter dash in 7.93-seconds. Junior Debbie Knubley won the 400-meter dash with a school-record time of 59.09-seconds. Senior Jaime Orewiler set a school-record in the one-mile run with a first-place time of 4:59.53 that is the eighth-fastest in Division III this year. Junior Shannon McNeil took second in the high jump with a leap of 5' 2-1/4”.

North Central won the men's portion of the meet with 185 points, Wisconsin-Platteville scored 160 points in second place, Lewis took this with 75 points, College of DuPage scored 42 points in fourth place and Wheaton recorded 39 points in fifth place.

Junior Luke Vance set a school-record in the men's 800-meter run with a first-place time of 1:52.90 that is the fifth-fastest in Division III this year. Fellow junior Mark Phillips (PICTURED LEFT) was second in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 15:40.10. Freshman Brett Haffner posted a time of 9:01.61 to finish fourth in the 3,000 meter run. Junior Parker Thompson finished fifth in the one-mile run with an effort of 4:19.79.
