Thunder women's tennis team wins its eighth-straight CCIW Women's Tennis Championship

The Wheaton Thunder women's tennis team wrapped up 2012 CCIW Women's Tennis Championship on Saturday at the Oak Brook Tennis Center. Wheaton won four of six the six individual championships and the Thunder won all three doubles titles to win the overall team title. Wheaton's conference title is a league-best 18th CCIW Championship in the sport. The Thunder has won the last eight conference crowns.

Wheaton scored 75 points to win the title, Augustana took second with 49 points, Carthage recorded 37 points in third place, Illinois Wesleyan finished fourth with 29 points, North Central scored 21 points in fifth place, Elmhurst took sixth with 14 points and Millikin finished seventh.

Veteran head coach Jane Nelson has guided Wheaton to all 18 of the program's CCIW Championships. She noted of her team's title-winning weekend, "I was pleased with our performance and thought everyone in our lineup played well. Our three seniors led the way with five flight championships between them." Nelson continued, "I also think the success of our program is built on hard work at practices day in and day out. Because of the strong work ethic of ALL of our team members at practice, all of them played a role in us winning the conference championship not just those who were actually on the courts this weekend. It was a total team effort." 

Kirsten Boyer
Senior Sarah Ray won her first-round match at number-one singles against Millikin's Cydney Boyd 6-0, 6-0. Ray advanced to Saturday's championship match with a 7-5, 6-1 victory against Elmhurst's Annie Dugan. Ray lost to Kim Sawyer 5-7, 4-6 for the CCIW Championship at number-one singles on Saturday.

Kirsten Boyer (PICTURED LEFT) received a first round bye at number-two single and she defeated Helen Alex of Illinois Wesleyan 6-2, 6-4 in the semifinals. She rallied to defeat Carthage's Haleigh McPeek 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 on Saturday to win the conference championship at number-two singles.

Lauren Schlabach had a first-round bye at number-three singles. She was a 6-1, 6-2 winner against Lauren Drawbridge of Illinois Wesleyan in the semifinals. Schlabach fell to Augustana's Krista Panko 4-6, 4-6 in the championship match at number-three singles on Saturday.

Julia Carey
Marissa Shults defeated Illinois Wesleyan's Alissa Goetz 6-0, 6-1 in the semifinals at number-four singles. Shults was a 6-2, 6-4 winner against Augustana's Aileen MacDonald in the championship round on Saturday to win the conference crown.

Wheaton's Julia Carey (PICTURED RIGHT) had a first-round bye at number-five singles. Carey won her semifinal match against Carthage's Kirsten Peterson 6-1, 6-2. Carey defeated Rebecca Ross of North Central 6-2, 6-1 on Saturday in the championship match at number-five singles.

Julie Buursma
Julie Buursma (PICTURED LEFT) defeated Nicole Nelson of Illinois Wesleyan  6-0, 6-1 in the semifinals at number-six singles. Buursma won the conference title in the flight with a 6-1, 6-1 win against Carthage's Holly Weber on Saturday.

The number-one doubles team of Ray and Buursma won the conference title and opened up with an 8-3 win against Helen Alex and Andrea Kerwin of Illinois Wesleyan in the semifinals. They secured the title with an 8-4 victory against Bari Reynolds and Haleigh McPeek of Carthage in the championship match.

Marissa Shults
The number-two doubles team of Boyer and Shults defeated Lauren Drawbridge and Alissa Goetz of Illinois Wesleyan 8-4 in the semifinals. Boyer and Shults (PICTURED RIGHT) won the championship match against Carthage's Erin Hendrickson and Abbi Howell 8-2.

The Thunder duo of Schlabach and Erika Nelson earned the conference title at number-three doubles. Schlabach and Nelson opened with an 8-4 win against North Central's Rebecca Ross and Kassandra Bernardo in the semifinals. The Wheaton tandem won the championship match 8-0 against Augustana's Meghan Wethington and Krista Panko.
