Thunder men's basketball program announces four student-athletes to join the program next Fall

Head Coach Mike Schauer
Wheaton College head men's basketball coach Mike Schauer has announced his team's 2011 recruiting class. Four young men, hailing from four states, have submitted a deposit reserving a place in Wheaton's class of 2015, with plans of playing for the Thunder men's basketball team.

"We really like this recruiting class,” noted Thunder Coach Mike Schauer, “It is a very typical Wheaton class in the sense that it does not have the quantity that is found at most of the other CCIW schools but all four of these young men have the potential to contribute significantly to our program over the next four seasons. They are talented basketball players who are excellent students and committed Christian young men. This group also addresses our two greatest needs. First, we have added size to the program and second, we have added a true point guard. Finally, due to his injury, Michael Kvam is now technically in this class from an eligibility standpoint. When he is added to the mix, this is a pretty special group of players that could all be on the floor together at the same time. However, as I do every year around this time, I want to reiterate that this group will ultimately be evaluated on how well they represent the institution, by who they become as men, and by how many games they win. It is what they accomplish here as a group that matters, not what they achieved individually in high school.”

The newcomers with plans to join the Thunder are:

Caleb DeMoss (Mendham N.J./West Morris Mendham HS) arrives at Wheaton by way of the Naval Academy Prep School in Newport, Rhode Island. Caleb is a six-foot point guard who averaged 17 points and six assists per game for Navy Prep this past season. As a high school senior, Caleb averaged 15.1 points per game while leading his team to a 26-4 record and a New Jersey Group 3 state championship and nabbing Morris County Player of the Year and Second Team All-State honors. Caleb was a three-year starter for Coach Jim Baglin, and appeared in the state final game all three seasons. Caleb's parents are Shawn and Mary DeMoss.

Peter Smith (Scottsdale, Ariz./Desert Mountain HS), is a six-foot-six-inch wing who was a four-year letter winner, three-year starter, and two-year captain for Coach Todd Fazio. Peter led his team to the state quarterfinals as a junior and to the semifinals as a senior. He was twice named First Team All-City, First Team All-5A Desert Valley Region, First Team All-Northeast Valley, and Honorable Mention All-State. As a junior, he was an Arizona Underclassman All-Star and was an Arizona All-Star as a senior. Peter led his team in scoring and rebounding as both a junior (18 ppg, 7 rpg, 2 apg) and senior (15 ppg, 6 rpg, 3 apg). Peter is the son of Tim and Mary Smith.

Joe Sokovich (Waterown, Wis./Watertown HS) is a six-foot-nine-inch post, playing for coach Jamie Koepp at Watertown High School. Joe led his team in scoring (15.8 ppg), rebounding (8.5 rpg), and blocked shots (2.5 bpg) while shooting 53% from the floor and 71% from the foul line. He also led the Goslings in both scoring (14.0 ppg) and rebounding (10.0 rpg) as a junior. Joe was twice named an All-Conference performer in the Little Ten Conference, and was nominated to play in the All-Star game in Wisconsin's largest classification. His parents are Ron and Carol (Imes '86) Sokovich.

Jordan Van Eps, (Arden Hills, Minn./Mounds View HS) is a six-foot-four-inch wing who averaged 17.8 points per game as a senior, while breaking the 30-point barrier on four occasions. A four-year varsity player and team captain as a senior, Jordan was selected to the Suburban East All-Conference Team, All-State Honorable Mention at the AAAA level, and Outstanding Athlete Academic Achievement Award. Jordan also averaged 4.6 rebounds per game, shot 83% from the foul line, and shares the Mounds View record for three-pointers in a game with eight. His parents are Brad and Pam Van Eps, and his high school coach was Zig Kauls.
