Wheaton, Ill. – The Wheaton College women's soccer team has been selected to host opening round action of the 2011 NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Tournament. Wheaton will host First and Second Round matches this Friday and Saturday at Joe Bean Stadium.
The Thunder (18-1-2) will face Penn State-Behrend (13-6-2) in a first round match of the tournament at 5 PM on Friday. Friday's other First Round match at Wheaton will feature the Capital University (12-7-2) facing Alma College (18-3-1), 30 minutes after the first match. Friday's victors will play each other at 6 PM in a Second Round match on Saturday to determine who advances to the NCAA Sectional the following weekend.
The First Round matches will be played on Friday at 5 PM and 7:30 PM. Saturday's Second Round contest will be at 6 PM. As a NCAA Championship event no free passes (season passes, parents passes, student ID's or faculty/staff ID) will be accepted. Admission to each day is $6 for adults, students (ages 12 and up) are $3, senior citizens are $3, ages 3-12 are $2 and children two years old and younger will be admitted for free.
Wheaton earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, by winning the CCIW Tournament last Saturday. The Thunder and Illinois Wesleyan tied 2-2 in the CCIW Tournament Championship match, however, the Thunder earned the tournament bid with a 7-6 edge in a shootout. Wheaton heads into Friday's match against Penn State-Behrend with an 18-1-2 record on the season. The Thunder posted a 6-1 record in CCIW play during the regular season to win the program's 15th CCIW Championship.
This year's trip to the postseason is Wheaton's 15th consecutive appearance in the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Tournament. Wheaton is 36-8-5 (.786) all-time in the postseason, with five Final Four appearances and National Championships in 2004, 2006 and 2007, in addition to a runner-up finish in 2008. Wheaton's 78.6% tournament winning percentage is the second-highest of any current Division III member institution in the history of the Division III Women's Soccer Tournament and the program's 36 all-time tournament wins is the second-highest among current Division III institutions.
Penn State Behrend is 13-6-2 on the year and received the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament. Friday's contest will be the first-ever meeting between Wheaton and Penn State Behrend in women's soccer.
