Battle Creek, Mich. - The Wheaton College men's golf team teed off the 2010 season by tying for second place at the Lou Collins Memorial Classic on Saturday.
Olivet College hosted the two-day, 15-team tournament at Gull Lake View Bedford Valley Golf Course. Olivet ended up winning the team title with a final score of 605 (306-299). Wheaton finished four shots along with Trine University (302-307). They are followed in order by Madonna University (311-303-614), Calvin College (312-303-615), Hope College (310-306-616), Adrian College (312-308-620), Grand Rapids Community College (314-306-620), Alma College (319-307-626), Albion College (317-312-629), Calvin B team (318-313-631), Spring Arbor University (310-325-635), Aquinas College (328-321-649), Olivet B team (326-325-651) and Lourdes College (334-338-672).
The individual medalist for the tournament was Adrian's David Sreiberg with rounds of 74 and 73.
The Thunder golfers shot consistently near each other throughout the lineup.
Chase Yacko (77-74-151) and
Jonny Tink (76-75-151) tied for seventh place to lead the team.
Ben Meyer (74-82-156) tied for 24th place and was followed by Daniel Downey (81-76-157) and
Steven Moore (79-78-157). Golfing as individuals,
Ryan Augustine tallied 78-78-156 and
Ben Souders carded 80-76-156 to tie for 24th place.
The second place finish was the best ever placing for Wheaton at the Lou Collins Classic. Last year, the Thunder finished in fifth place.
"This weekend's shows our progress from last year against a solid field of teams," Wheaton head coach Jay Martin said. "Our putting will improve, so this result bodes well. It's a good start to the year."
Wheaton men's golf has a two-week break from competition until Sept. 17-18 at the Bethel College (Ind.) Pilot Invitational.
