Kissimmee, Fla. – The Wheaton College baseball team took advantage of a spacious field and knocked five triples in a 13-4 victory over Mount St. Mary College on Tuesday.
The Thunder improved to 3-2 on the year while the Blue Knights fell to 0-5.
They squared off Disney Hess field hosting the nine-inning game boasted enormous outfield dimensions, giving outfielders plenty of territory to cover and the hitters plenty of gaps to aim for.
The Thunder built a 9-0 lead through the first three innings off MSMC pitcher Matt Paci. The second inning featured three triples, which were hit by
Danny Pyne,
Charlie Antal and
Justin Zeller.
Josh Weaver added an RBI triple in the first inning and
Austin Driggers also had a three-bagger in the eighth as the Thunder offense hit the ball hard to the gaps all game. In total, Wheaton scored six out of the eight innings and tallied 19 hits.
Wheaton's defense also put on a good performance early, closing out each of the first three innings with groundball double plays to squelch rallies.
The Blue Knights scored all three of their runs in the fourth inning on a two-run single and an RBI groundout. But they could only muster one more hit the rest of the game.
Freshman
Eric Albaugh shut down the MSMC lineup to get his first collegiate victory. He threw 4-1/3 innings of scoreless relief, allowing one hit and one walk to go with four strikeouts.
Paci took the loss, allowing nine runs (six earned) on nine hits in 2-2/3 innings.
Antal paced the Thunder offense, going 4-for-5 with three RBI. Zeller and Pyne both went 3-for-3 from the plate. Driggers and Weaver tallied two hits and two RBI each.
The Thunder continues its spring trip in Florida with a 10:00 AM (ET) doubleheader vs. Colby-Sawyer College on Thursday.
