Winter Haven, Fla. – With dark clouds threatening overhead all day, the Wheaton College baseball team squeezed in one game before the rains hit, beating Colby-Sawyer College 3-0 on Thursday. The second game of the doubleheader was canceled.
The Thunder improved to 4-2 on the year while the Chargers fell to 3-4.
Game one of the day was plagued by rain showers off-and-on throughout. There was a one-hour rain delay heading into the third inning before play resumed.
Pitching was the dominant force on the day, as Wheaton's hurlers held CSC to four hits in the seven-inning game. Freshman
Trey Martin was sharp on the mound.
Colby-Sawyer's biggest threat came in the fifth inning when the Chargers loaded the bases with one out. But Martin escaped the jam with back-to-back strikeouts.
The Thunder had seven hits on the day, and got on the board thanks to a RBI-double by
Josh Weaver in the fourth inning, n RBI double by
Brian Kolb in the fifth and n RBI single by
Justin Zeller in the fifth.
Matt MaLossi finished off the game for his first collegiate save. The sophomore threw two innings of hitless relief, walking one and striking out two.
Martin picked up his first collegiate win in five innings of work. He allowed four hits and three walks to go with six strikeouts. Of the eight strikeouts on the day, Wheaton pitchers struck seven of the batters out looking. Zeller 2-for-4 with an RBI while
Drew Golz went 2-for-3.
Mike Bertuccio took the complete game loss. He allowed seven hits, three runs, walked two and struck out five.
Game two went on as scheduled, but heavy rains eventually made the field unplayable. The game was called with Wheaton leading 4-0 in the bottom of the third inning. Up to that point, Thunder starting pitcher
John Little had only allowed one hit with three strikeouts in three innings of work.
The Thunder continues its spring trip in Florida with a 12:30 PM (ET) doubleheader vs. Loras College on Saturday.
