Men's and women's swimming opens season at University of Chicago

- The Wheaton College men's and women's swimming team opened their season with a three-team meet at University of Chicago vs. the Maroons and Boston College on Saturday.

On the women's side, Boston College defeated Wheaton 185 to 103 and University of Chicago topped Wheaton 190.5 to 103.5.

Kelsey Craggett came away as the Thunder's top performer with one win and two third-place finishes individually. She won the 200-yard IM in a time of 2:16.37 and took third in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:09.89) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:32.88). Moire Yue captured a win of her own in the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 24.87.

Wheaton's Carlie Herich kicked off her collegiate career with a pair of runner-up finishes in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:49.36) and in the 200-yard backstroke (2:11.19). Also taking second place were Caroline Hannema in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:09.68) and Jamie Walitsch in the 200-yard butterfly (2:12.90).

The Thunder also compiled four more third-place finishes. Lauren Jurgens was third in the 200-yard freestyle (1:59.22) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:16.05). The 200-yard medley relay (Yue, Liz Hartman, Heather Crockett, Kelsey Craggett) finished in 1:53.29, while the 400-yard freestyle relay (Jurgens, Crockett, Ali Offerdalhl, Leah Loefstedt) came in at 3:50.16.

On the men's side, Wheaton fell to Boston College 227.5 to 58.5 and to University of Chicago 206 to 82.

Also in his collegiate debut, freshman Tim Walker took second place in the 50-yard freestyle (22.25). The Wheaton relays finished in third place – in the 200-yard medley relay (Preston Conger, Mike Placeway, Matthew Gallagher, Walker) in a time of 1:39.61; and in the 400-yard freestyle relay (David Brown, AJ Provonsha, Walker, Carl Sveen) in a time of 3:22.66.
