Whitewater, Wis. - The Wheaton women's soccer team traveled to Wisconsin on Wednesday night for a non-conference match against the UW-Whitewater Warhawks. Tonight marked the fourth year in a row that the two teams have faced off, with UW-Whitewater coming out on top with a final score of 1-0 this year. Last year the two teams played to a scoreless draw. Wednesday's match moved UW-Whitewater's season record to 6-2-1, while Wheaton stands at 1-6-1 for the season.
The Thunder made an early statement on offense less than four minutes into the first half with a shot attempt from junior Annika Lindquist—a header off a corner kick that missed wide of the right side of the goal. However, the Warhawks responded accordingly, managing to score their first and only goal twenty-two minutes into the half—a shot from Leah Dehne that just sank into the upper right side of the Thunder's goal after a cross from Booklynn Carlson on the left. While the Thunder added pressure in the second half with six shot attempts, they were ultimately unable to even the score as the Warhawks emerged with the 1-0 win at home..
The Thunder were out-shot by the Warhawks, posting seven total shot attempts to UW Whitewater's 23, with shots on goal registering at two and 15, respectively. Sophomore Goalkeeper Lydia Martin made 14 saves in the goal, only allowing a single goal in the first half. Tonight's match was a somewhat physical one, with the Thunder recording five fouls, the Warhawks recording six, and each team earning a yellow card.
The Thunder will kick off conference play this weekend in the Windy City with an away game against North Park University on Saturday, September 26th at 1:00 PM.
