Tom Thornton, a 1983 graduate, was stellar in both basketball and baseball during his time at Wheaton. In basketball, Thornton topped the 1,000-point milestone on the final shot of his senior year. In 82 career games, the forward made 49% of his shots and 80% of his free throws in averaging 12.2 points, 2.7 rebounds, 1.7 assists on squads that went 43-58.
Voted the Most Inspirational player on the ’82 baseball team, Tom hit .319 over three seasons and batted in 16 runs in leading Wheaton to a 15-12 senior season. The shortstop and third baseman had a career .398 on-base percentage.
