A 1987 graduate, Steve Wiper collected many honors during his time in the pool for Wheaton. Wiper earned All-American honors and won the CCIW Championship in the 200-yard backstroke in 1986 and 1987, in addition to All-American accolades in the 100-yard backstroke in 1986. At the 1987 National Championships, he set a personal best in the 400-yard individual medley by three seconds, in spite of that he being his weakest stroke.

Excelling in an area of weakness is one of the many lessons that Wiper learned from Wheaton swimming. He remembers a quote from coach Jon Lederhouse, “How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.” Reminding Steve that, “Everything of value in life takes persistence”. In swimming and life Wiper learned, “The journey of 1,000 yards begins with the first lap. Stop counting the cost and get moving.”
