Steve Long was one of the most decorated Wheaton soccer players ever. Long helped led Wheaton to a record of 47-26-4 during his four-year career and received NCAA playoff bids each year. Steve is currently ranks high in the Wheaton record books for career goals, career points, and single season goals. Long was awarded with Wheaton’s Most Valuable Player and All-IISC honors each of his last three seasons.
After scoring two goals as a freshman in 1975, Long was named All-Midwest Region Second Team and All-State as a sophomore in 1976. As a junior, Long scored a school-record 25 goals, leading Wheaton to a second-place finish in the region. He was voted All-Midwest First Team and All-American Honorable Mention. A team captain in 1978, Long scored 22 goals with eight assists, leading Wheaton to the NCAA playoffs again. He was also selected to play for the West team in the Senior Bowl Soccer Classic in Tampa, Florida and earned All-America Second Team, All-Midwest First Team and All-IISC First Team honors.
