Stan Thompson was an All-American gymnast in 1977, leading Wheaton to the highest finish of any Division III school in the national gymnastics team championships, and won the 1978 NCAA Division II national pommel horse championship. His coach Bud Williams noted of Thompson, “People were amazed at his extension, smoothness, and fluidity of his swing on the pommel horse. He had great extension on his scissors and lift moves.”
Thompson says of his time at Wheaton, “One lesson I learned through my athletic experience at Wheaton is that recognition is not everything. Anything I do that is related to my vocation, I do because of its merit for others and its ability to stretch me as an individual. I also perform certain tasks as an expression of my commitment and worship to the Lord. My involvement in gymnastics taught me the importance of yielding all of my abilities to God for His glory and service.”
