Sam Orvis, a 1932 graduate, participated in basketball and baseball over his four years at Wheaton. After not playing basketball in high school, Sam worked his way onto the varsity squad and into the lineup early in his freshman year. He played all four years and served as captain his senior season.
On the diamond, Orvis pitched and played third base or outfield when he wasn’t on the hill. Statistics are somewhat vague from Orvis’ era, but he won four and lost two while batting .294 on an 8-7 team his junior year. In his senior year, the team was 9-5 and finished in a three-way tie in the Northern Illinois Baseball League. The team won the championship in a Memorial Day playoff by beating Armour Tech and Mt. Morris.
