The softball field on Wheaton’s campus and the annual Excellence in Teaching Award are named in honor of Professor Emerita Ruth Leedy. Ruth provided countless contributions to Wheaton over the years as a student, professor, and coach. Her largest contribution was her service to the advancement of female athletics at Wheaton. She graduated from Wheaton in 1932 with a bachelor’s degree in education and played volleyball, basketball, and softball. She earned a master’s degree in education in 1939 from Northwestern University.
Professor Leedy served as professor of physical education at Wheaton from 1935-77, teaching kinesiology and other physical education courses. Professor Leedy initiated intercollegiate programs in field hockey and archery, and also coached tennis and volleyball.
