Dick Hollatz transferred to Wheaton in September 1954 without having any previous running experience. Under the tutelage of Gil Dodds, it didn’t take Dick long to achieve success. During his career, Dick came within a tenth of a second of tying the world record for the indoor 60-yard dash and was the first man in the conference to break 10 seconds in the 100-yard dash. He was Conference Champion three times, and in Wheaton’s record books, Dick still is high on many lists.
One life lesson that Dick took with him after finishing his running career was that, “how well you perform in a meet or any other endeavor is contingent on the preparation prior to the event. Preparation is the key.”
