Matt Sheehan was a two-time national qualifier at the Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships in the pole vault. He placed second in the pole vault at the 2004 Division III Championships with a height of 16' 1-1/4" to earn Division III All-America honors. He overcame windy conditions at the Championships in Canton, New York to achieve the accomplishment. In 2003, in his first appearance at the Division III Championships, he placed 13th at Nationals with a height of 15' 1".

Matt started pole vaulting late in his time as a student at Wheaton. He says of the experience, "I learned it is never too late for God to open the door for new opportunities that others would consider silly or a waste of time. Even when the clock appears to run out, there might still be time left." He made the most of his opportunity in the sport. He entered the 2004 Division III Championships with the lowest qualifying height at the meet and left upstate New York with a second-place finish, narrowly missing the National Championship in pole vault.
