A 1931 graduate, former track and cross country standout Lyndon Hess was named the 1931 outstanding collegiate track man in Illinois and finished in first place in the 1929 Illinois Intercollegiate Cross Country meet. On one day in 1929, he broke the conference mark for the mile and then finished just one tenth of a second off the two-mile record. Hess’ mile and two mile performances stood as school record for several decades.
