In 1971 Laine Malmquist set a school record in the outdoor triple jump of 47' 6" (14.48-meters) that continues to stand today, 48 years later. He also held Wheaton's indoor triple jump record of 14.33-meters for 45 years until it was broken by Sola Olateju in 2017. Malmquist served as a coach for Olateju in his career, including on the record-setting jump in 2017. Malmquist currently has the program's sixth-ranked mark in the long jump at 22' 10" (6.96-meters).

Laine recalls, "My favorite track & field experience at Wheaton were the triangular meets we had each year with Calvin and Taylor. Each school seemed to be at its best as we competed as fellow Christians for the glory of Christ and His Kingdom.  My senior year Wheaton won this meet on its home track, and I had the honor of winning three individual events (long jump, triple jump & 440-yard) and sharing a victory in the mile relay.

Laine says he feels that competing in track and field at Wheaton tought him some lessons, "All things are possible when we work and compete for the glory of God, but we are bound to be disappointed when we do so for our own honor and recognition!"
