Kikuo “Cookie” Moriya starred in track and cross country during his time at Wheaton. Cookie was “discovered” by Coach Gil Dodds in 1950 while Dodds was on a global evangelistic tour to Moriya’s native Japan. During Moriya’s three years at Wheaton, he won 46 races and established school records in both the mile and the two mile. In 1954, Moriya won the NCAA crown in the two mile and is the only runner ever to have won an individual championship of the NCAA’s combined divisions in school history.
