    John Dobbert anchored Wheaton basketball’s front line during the late 1950s with his imposing 6’7’’ frame. During the 1956-57 season, when the Crusader went 28-1 and won the NCAA College Division championship, John saw limited playing time with the varsity but posted a 15.4 ppg average with the junior varsity Bombers squad and prepared himself for a starting role in 1957. His sophomore year, John average 9.1 points and 11.6 rebounds and the Crusaders finished with a stellar 27-3 record and finished third at the NCAA College Division National Championship. As a junior, John scored 8.8 ppg and 9.9 rpg on a team that went 23-4 and won the CCI championship for a third straight season. 
Dobbert’s best statistical season came as a senior when he average 15.8 ppg and 12.9 rpg on a team that went 16-10 and won the NCAA Great Lakes Regional Championship. In that tournament, he was named to the All-Regional First Team. In 93 career games, John scored 933 points and garnered 963 rebounds and the Crusaders had a brilliant 94-18 record over his four years.
