Looking back on his time at Wheaton, he learned, "That we serve a powerful God who can make the seemingly impossible a reality. There aren't a lot of D3 athletes who get the opportunity to play professional sports, but God gave me the opportunity and allowed me to continue to work in that arena while impacting lives for the kingdom…" Joel and his wife, Betty, have two young daughters, Evelyn (age 6) and Jacquelyn (age 4).
