Joe Bean served as Wheaton's head men's soccer coach from 1969 until his retirement in 2006. In that time, he compiled a record of 540-153-54 at Wheaton and a career record of 606-185-61 to retire as the winningest coach in the history of men's college soccer. Bean guided Wheaton to NCAA Division III Championships in 1984 and 1997, with National Runner-Up finishes in 1999 and 2006.
Bean received the 1984 and 1997 National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Division III Coach of the Year Awards after he led Wheaton to NCAA Division III national crowns. He is a past president of the NSCAA and was given its highest honor at the 47th annual banquet in 1989, and later was the first recipient of the NSCAA/NISOA Merit Award for sportsmanship and integrity. Bean has been inducted into the U.S. Soccer Hall of Fame as well as the NSCAA and NISOA Hall of Fame.
