Jim Rust, a 1949 graduate, had an outstanding career as a member of the Crusader track team setting numerous records. Jim joined the track team as a sophomore and promptly set a new school record in the indoor quarter mile and ran the fastest split on a new indoor school record in the mile relay. He continued to excel during the outdoor season as he set a new crusader record in the 440-yard dash and was part of another school record in the mile relay. To wrap up the season, Jim won the 440 and was part of the victorious mile relay at the first CCI track meet.
As a junior, Jim was again part of an indoor school record in the mile relay and then became the first sub-50 second quarter miler in Wheaton’s history during the outdoor season. He won his second CCI title in the 440 with a school record effort and anchored the Crusaders’ mile relay to another conference championship.
Elected captain of the team as a senior, Jim lowered the indoor quarter mile record and anchored the mile relay to a school record at the Chicago Daily News Relays. An injury hampered his final outdoor season and kept him out of the CCI track meet.
