Jack Mayhall was a three-sport participant at Wheaton in football, basketball and baseball. In football, he played quarterback and halfback as a freshman and scored three touchdowns. During his sophomore year, he was used exclusively at halfback and in 1947 he was the signal caller for the 7-1-1 Crusaders. Then in his senior season, he completed 26 of 67 passes for 591 yards and eight touchdowns, was named team MVP and earned All-CCIW honors.
In basketball, he was a starting forward his freshman year on a team which went 16-5. And, in baseball, he played several infield positions before setting in at second base for his final three seasons. His best individual game came during his sophomore year, when he went five for five vs. Lake Forest.
Jack recalls “Three things [that] stand out [from his time at Wheaton]: 1)The spiritual impact on my life through the friendship of several men on teams; 2) The leadership and character qualities I learned from Harve Chrouser; 3) The deep friendships developed with men on the teams, many lasting to this day.”
