George Olson made a name for himself as an athlete and as a coach at Wheaton College. He transferred to Wheaton his sophomore year and made an immediate impact on the football team. He played tackle for the Crusaders during that time.
Following military service, he began a long coaching career at the College. He was named head wrestling coach in 1946 and assistant football coach in 1946. He held both positions until his retirement in 1974. In 29 years as wrestling coach, Olson’s teams compiled winning records in 22 of them. From 1945 to 1960, Wheaton had a dual meet record of 119-40-2 with the Crusaders were competing against major Midwestern universities. During Olson’s tenure, the Crusaders won the Wheaton Invitational four times, and they finished runner-up five other years. For his accomplishments, he also has been inducted into the Illinois Wrestling Coaches Hall of Honor.
