Eugene Campbell, class of 1977, burst onto the scene to lead his team in rushing as a freshman and for the three following seasons. Each year Campbell rushed for over 500 yards and finished with 2,241 career yards (4.5 yards per carry), which still ranks high on the school’s all time list. With uncanny ability to follow blockers, halfback Campbell combined power and shiftiness in Wheaton’s winning seasons of 1975 (5-4) and 1976 (6-3). He twice led the team in receiving yards and, at graduation, was fourth all-time in scoring. Eugene was named an academic All-American both junior and senior years.
