Erwin Gernand had an excellent career with the Crusader baseball team as an infielder during his time at Wheaton. Gernand posted a .310 career batting average over his four years of playing for Coach Lee Pfund. He had his best season in 1964, his junior year, when he hit .365 and led the team in seven offensive categories. In 1965, Erwin compiled a team-high .342 average and led the Crusaders in hits, stolen bases, and walks. For his career, he belted out 99 hits, scored 72 runs, had 45 RBI and stole 44 bases.
