Ed Coray graduated from Wheaton in 1923 after participating in football, basketball, baseball and tennis for the Crusaders. Coray had a solid athletic career at Wheaton but his biggest contributions came in the form of coaching and as athletic director. Coray returned to Wheaton to coach in 1926, he continued in that role, later as Athletic Director as well, until 1951. He perhaps is best remembered as the basketball coach in the 1940s when the team compiled a 136-50 record. His coaching duties covered football, basketball, baseball, track and cross-country. Ed made a significant impact on the entire intercollegiate athletic program. Ed later became the Executive Director of the Alumni Association in 1951 and Alumni Gym was renamed “Edward A. Coray” Alumni Gym in his honor in 1968.
