Doug Johnston was a three-sport standout in football, wrestling, and baseball for the Crusaders during the mid 1930s. In football, Doug was a starting tackle for Head Coaches Wendell Smith and Fred Walker and provided a strong presence on the offensive line. He served as captain as a senior for the 1936 team and was named to the All-Conference team.

During his sophomore year, Doug joined the wrestling team and made an immediate impact. He helped the team to the Little 19 conference championship by winning the heavyweight crown. He defended his heavyweight crown as a junior and went undefeated for the season as he registered 15 falls in 15 matches.

In baseball, Doug’s best season was his last when he pitched 110 innings over 14 games, striking out 127 men, including 16 in one outing. He immediately was signed after graduation to the St. Louis Cardinals farm team at Portsmouth, Va., in the Middle Atlantic League, but played out the summer at another farm club at Fostoria, Ohio.
