Don Meyer, 1957 graduate, was a solid catcher for the Crusader baseball team during the mid 1950s. Coach Lee Pfund notes, “[Don] did everything well for us: handled the pitchers, blocked the plate, good throwing arm and hit in the clutch. There’s no question in my mind that if the league had been naming all-conference baseball players in those days that Donnie would have been the choice for catcher most of those years.”
Meyer batted .268 for four years - including a great junior season (.333) when he was among the CCI leaders with a .404 average. As a freshman, he was second in RBI, and then led the team in that department as a junior and senior. All told, he drove in 47 of Wheaton’s 356 runs-batted-in during his four seasons. Pfund credits Don’s team leadership and all-around skill in handling the pitching staff for Wheaton’s second-place finish in the conference in 1957.
