Dick Helm was a three-sport standout in football, basketball and track. In football, Helm was a halfback and garnered Second Team All-CCI honors as a junior and First Yeam All-CCI honors as a senior. He co-captained the title winning 1954 team while being named Honorable Mention All-American. Maybe his finest game came during the 1953 championship season while beating archrival Lake Forest 23-13. Helm led the Crusader charge by scoring two touchdowns, kicking the longest field goal in school history up to then and booting an extra point.
On the basketball court, Dick helped led the 1952-53 team to a conference championship while averaging 15.3 points, placing fourth in the nation in free throw percentage and earning Second Yeam All-CCI honors. The Crusader basketball team compiled a 59-31 record over Helm’s four seasons. On the track, Helm ran the sprints up to the 440 and broad jump for several seasons, winning the CCI Championship in the latter event. Helm went on to be the head coach of the Crusader basketball team for eight seasons from 1975 to 1983.
