Dave Paynter contributed to the success of the Wheaton Crusader basketball program over his two seasons with the team after transferring before his junior season. Paynter averaged 25 points a game in the 1943-44 season at a time when most games were won with a total of 40 points or less. David scored 46 points against Chicago Tech to set a single-game Wheaton scoring mark that would stand for another ten years. Wheaton was 16-2 that year.
In addition to his basketball abilities, Paynter was an even better baseball player but was unable to participate at Wheaton because of signing a professional contract. He would leave school in mid-spring for training with the Cleveland Indians organization, where he played in the minor leagues for a number of seasons.
