Clarke Evans, a 1932 graduate, had a very strong career for the Crusaders as a baseball standout. He led the team in batting and extra base hits his three starting years, hitting .390 and .418 the first two seasons. He was a great defensive outfielder and pitcher. He went his entire career without making an error. Evans’ strikeout pitch—a “drop”—today called a “sinker” often recorded ten strikeouts a game. As a senior, Clarke shut out Mount Morris, 2-0, for the Little 19 championship, beating Nelson Potter who went on to lead the St. Louis Cardinals to a pennant during a long major league career. Evans also varsity lettered in basketball.
