Chris Bates played forward for the Wheaton men’s soccer team in the mid-1990s, earning First Team All-Conference three times. As a four-year starter, he totaled 17 career goals and distributed 30 career assists. Bates’ best season came in his senior year of 1996, when he was named CCIW Player of the Year and Second Team All-American with seven goals and nine assists.
Bates was also part of the soccer teams that combined to hold the NCAA record for most consecutive games without a loss (66 games). He considered the team to be “a group of brothers working toward the same goals, both on and off the field, helping keep you on the right path and providing direction not only for your athletic life but also your entire future.”
Chris singled out teammate Graham Roxburgh as influential during his collegiate career. “He has been an example to me since the day I met him of how to use my platform as an athlete to honor the Lord and tell others about Him,” Bates said.
Former head soccer coach Joe Bean spoke highly of Bates as a consummate competitor. “Chris was one of the most determined players that I ever had,” Bean said. “He had a serious knee operation that cost him a year and he came back to be a captain his senior year. He showed a lot of courage and perseverance.”
Chris is now President of ServiceMaster of Geneva-St. Charles, specializing in Disaster Restoration Services and Carpet/Upholstery Cleaning. He and his wife Christel have four kids – Corbin, Logan, Grayden and Allexia.
