Carl Vining, a 1920 graduate, participated in football and basketball for the Crusaders. In football, he was known as a strong defensive player, good pass receiver and place kicker. Though an excellent all-around athlete, Carl’s best sport was probably basketball. In the 1918-19 season, Carl scored 40 points in one game, a record that was not broken until the 1943-44 season. In the years that Vining played, it was exceptional for an entire team to score 40 points in a game making Carl’s feat even more impressive. Vining also played baseball in 1920 and was captain of the 1921 team.
