Bud Schaeffer, a 1950 graduate, led the Crusaders to a 75-26 record from 1946-1950, while being voted unanimous All-CCI four times and honored as a Little All-American. The three-time captain’s 1,271 career points (12.8 ppg) only hint at the skills he brought to Wheaton teams where he led in assists and steals while playing tenacious defense.
The 1949 game versus Valparaiso was a notable game because of Wheaton’s amazing comeback. Schaeffer led the Crusaders back from a 24-point deficit by collecting 10 steals in the victory. After graduation, Bud toured North and South America with the Boston Whirlwinds vs. the Harlem Globetrotters.
